Waldheim

Waldheim

"Introduction to Landscape Architecture"

Prof. Charles Waldheim, Harvard University

with Boya Zhang, Harvard GSD, MArch ’17, DDES ‘22

This mentoring workshop will introduce young people in China to the field of landscape architecture. The program will run for two weeks in July, 2020, and will be led by Prof. Charles Waldheim. Prof. Waldheim will be assisted by Mr. Boya Zhang and a team of assistants. The workshop will introduce young people to the professional roles, real-world responsibilities, and necessary preparation for a career in this rapidly growing international field.

1.Background and vision of the project

Each member of the group will be prepared to pursue the academic training and professional experiences for an impactful and meaningful career in the rapidly growing field of landscape architecture. China’s unique combination of ongoing rapid urbanization, extreme environmental challenges, and pressing societal and demographic issues make the profession of landscape architecture particularly timely. Over the past decades, as landscape architecture has grown in visibility and relevance to these challenges, the number of students and schools of landscape architecture have exploded across China. The international demand for landscape architects continues to outpace this growth, and as the world continues to urbanize at an unprecedented rate, landscape architecture has been identified by many as among the most meaningful and important fields for young people today. This workshop will introduce the practice of landscape architecture, and prepare members for the rigorous academic and professional requirements of this exciting new field.

2.Workshop Elements

The workshop will consist of three elements: lectures, seminar discussions, project-based tutorials on student projects, and individual mentoring sessions with each member of the workshop.

Lectures

The lectures will introduce the origins of landscape architecture in the West, as well as the explosive growth in the profession in East Asia and China in the past decades. These lectures will introduce the key concepts and terms associated with the study of landscape architecture, and will introduce young people to leading thinkers and practitioners in the field today. These lectures will also include an overview of the various roles and responsibilities of the landscape architect, as well as the educational, professional, and ethical preparation required for young people considering a career in landscape architecture.

Seminars

These lectures will be augmented by smaller seminar discussions enabling dialogue and sharing of ideas and experiences from the group. These seminar sessions will also enable smaller group discussions of the challenges associated with rapid urbanization in East Asia generally, and China, specifically. These sessions will also foster a culture of reading and precedent review that are characteristic of the study and practice of landscape architecture.

Project-based tutorials & individual mentoring

Lectures and seminars will be complemented by a single two-week introductory design exercise. This design exercise will introduce young people to the foundations of design as well as the specific tools and techniques of landscape architecture. Members of the workshop will be invited to develop their own design project through a range of daily drawing and modeling assignments. The design project portion of the workshop will begin with the introduction of various precedents and will concern the design of a small courtyard or otherwise bounded space on an academic campus near the workshop site in Beijing. Members of the workshop will be invited to develop their own, individual design response to the site and situation based on an introduction to the fundamental elements and primary concepts of contemporary landscape architecture.

3. The outcome of the projects

These projects will be presented, discussed, and rehearsed with the workshop by the teaching team. Individual student projects will be reviewed in larger group pin-ups, smaller group

discussions, and individual one-on-one project reviews with each member of the workshop. The design project portion of the workshop will culminate in a small exhibition of individual design proposals and supplementary sessions on the documentation of work and the preparation of a design portfolio for academic and professional purposes. Finally, each member of the workshop will have the opportunity for an individual mentoring session with Prof. Waldheim to discuss their goals and aspirations as well as concrete next steps for their academic and professional preparation for a career in the field of landscape architecture.

4. The workshop has three primary goals:

First, to introduce young people to the rapidly growing field of landscape architecture and its role in the development of healthy and vibrant cities;

Second, to provide a basic literacy in the necessary attributes and characteristics of individuals pursuing a career in the field while communicating the concrete academic and professional steps in such a career;

Third, to motivate young people to imagine their potential for making a creative contribution to the health of cities and people’s lives through design. The workshop has been developed and is suitable for young people of any age who have no previous experience with or exposure to landscape architecture.

5. Suitable people:

All the workshop components are for young people with an appetite to learn, but little to no previous experience in design or landscape architecture. The workshop will be delivered by the team in a combination of English and Mandarin, as appropriate to the subject matter and format of the specific portion of the workshop in question.
